Buy art

Buy art firstly, because you don’t need to, and secondly because you can and you need to. Now let’s get serious.

This article which deals mainly with visual arts is an attempt to provide some valid reasons and prove the importance of purchasing art. From personal observations and without making too many generalizations, it would appear that there is a general lack of interest in the subject of art. Perhaps the subject is not stressed enough, perhaps it is missing altogether from the current educational curriculum. The facts are there that many do not consider art a major necessity, or an important priority when it comes to buying things. Buy art for the following reasons:

Art can act as a wall decoration It has the potential to transform a dull living space into a lively environment. It can brighten a room and make one feel better. And no, one does not necessarily have to match the color of their couch.

Art is communication The communication can be an idea, a thought, a vision or a scene. It could be a lesson to teach. A legacy to preserve. So, if one identifies with the communicative form of expression called art, and they wish to further communicate it to others by presenting it, then they must first own it.

Art is an expression Everyone needs to express something, it is a basic human need. While an artist who is a painter can pick a brush and paint, and a skilled writer can write a novel, others may not have the required skills to artistically paint or write. The so-called new “social media” phenomena acts as a platform for a new recently created form of expression. It is cheap, quick, down and dirty, and I presume, provides some sort of satisfaction of the need for artistic expression (even if it is just posting the art created by others). But this form of “social media art posting” will never equal buying real art.

Art is fashion Just like buying the latest dress because it is en vogue, art is not any different, people should buy fashionable good art matching their personality. A word of caution though. The art must be also good, not just fashionable.

Art is collectible It is like owning a coin collection an antique collection or any other type of collection.

Art is an investment The investment is in you. Of particular interest to this group should be original, one of a kind works of art. However, one should never buy art they do not actually like just because it is considered a “good investment”.

And there are so many other reasons why you should buy art, but perhaps of all the reasons I have enumerated above but the most compelling and most important one is the following:

Art is healing In the modern era, many hospitals in the United States have embarked on art initiatives and have established their own art programs. In her “Notes on Nursing,”(1860) Florence Nightingale described the patients’ need for beauty, and that “…the effect is on the body too…”. The nineties saw an increase in the number of studies and the research on the therapeutic effects of art, indicating that art was not just for decoration, but that it actually had a therapeutic effect on the healing process of patients. The therapeutic effects of art have now been widely documented in many research studies, conducted by many respected individuals in the healthcare arena. If not for any other reason but this last one, you should treat buying art as preventive medicine. Buy good art. “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” – Picasso

So buying art is really important as evidenced by many articles. Essentially I am trying to convince you that:

Art is everything

Conclusion

The subject of buying art is complex. The buying of art in itself is an art. Reference is made particularly to art carrying a high price tag, produced by established artists. The buyer must have deep knowledge in the art field as well as the sought artist.
